2008 is really unforgettable – Air21
by Josef RamosFriday, 9 January 2009 (2,840 Views, 9 Comments)
IF YOU LOOK and compare the previous years since they entered in the PBA in 2002, you or franchise owner Bert Lina may say 2008 is definitely the year for the Air21 Express despite the ups and downs.
Air21, playing with 6-foot-9 import Steve Thomas, made it to its first outright semifinals apperance since entering the league in 2002 after marking a 12-6 win-loss slate in the elimination round en route to a best-of-seven semifinals showdown against Magnolia.
Thomas averaged 24 points and 19 rebounds per game in the elimination round.
Arwind Santos earned a citations from the PBA Press Corps when he won the defensive player of the year after tallying in a total of 34.2 Sps this season.
His Fiesta Conference average was 13.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, while he
finished with an average of 20.0 points per game, 11.7 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game in the Philippine Cup.
Wynne Arboleda, his teammate, was the runner-up in the defensive player of the year battle, while Homer Se and Nino KG Canaleta also shared their own improvement in defense.
In fact, the Magnolia Beverage Masters (now San Miguel Beermen) took a one-game advantage against the Express in the series because of the absence of Thomas in Game 1 due to his commitment in a Korean League.
But the Express still prevailed in the series, where they massacred the Beverage Masters in Game six, 99-91, to advance in the best-of-seven finals and meet the Ginebra Gin Kings.
This was also Air21′s first ever franchise appearance in championship in the PBA since 2002.
“Yes that is something very memorable,” said one of the Express fans.
Although they lost the championship to the Gin Kings in pivotal Game 7, the thousand fans of the Express all over the country stay hopeful that one day a title would come in their backyard soon.
2007-2008 Philippine Cup
The Express, playing without Gary David in the early Philippine Cup due to ACL, turned out their hard days, but the determination of Arwind Santos, Ranidel De Ocampo, Homer Se and other teammates gave the team a brighter future.
The big game of David came back during the Fiesta Cup against the Magnolia Beverage Masters in Antipolo. He scored 24 points in that game to lead the Express to a 96-90 win.
Back in the 2007-2008 Philippine Cup, rookies JC Intal, Doug Kramer and Marvin Cruz were continuously developing their skills to help the squad while the Smart Philippine Cup was ongoing.
The Express closed out the 2007-2008 Smart Philippine Cup with 7-11 record.
After booting Ginebra out in the first stage of knock-out wildcard play, 119-100, the Air21 Express bowed out to the Coca-Cola Tigers, 109-102.
A new hope
Air21 surprised the fans (of course they were all mad about this) before the Chrsitmas by trading long-time
big man Ranidel De Ocampo to Talk ‘N Text for the rights of Don Allado and 2012 first round pick.
Few days after that blockbuster trade, Air21 acquired Cyrus Baguio and Celino Cruz in exchange of 2011 and 2012 first round pick on Christmas eve.
Earlier, Air21 team governor Lito Alvarez created some moves to boost the team’s frontline when he sent sixth overall pick Mark Borboran to the Alaska Aces for JR Quiñahan before the Philippine Cup opens and later on signed up Adonis Sta. Maria to one-conference contract.
The team also signed rookie Cholo Villanueva, a second round draftee, and later on he was relegated to the reserve list.
Air21 started slow in the PBA-KFC Philippine Cup elimination round as it lost its first three games.
But coach Bo Perasol and his crew bounced back and almost made it to outright quarterfinals.
Their last game in the elimination round – a 109-108 lost to the Talk ‘N Text Texters (No thanks to former Express Ranidel De Ocampo’s buzzer-beater) – which resulted to an 8-10 record.
Air21 won its opening wildcard game against Purefoods, 94-82, but it lost to the San Miguel Beermen, 86-105.
The Air21 Express will be renamed to Burger King – the other company owns by Bert Lina – in the PBA in the next conference (Fiesta Conference).

in 2006…Burger King was onwed by:
1. PERF Restaurants Inc.
2. PFN Holdings Corp.
PFN Holdings Corp. is 100% owned by Ayala family,
before they sold their share to BK Titans Inc.
PERF Restaurants Inc., franchisee of BK Asiapac Pte. Ltd.,
the parent company of all Burger King franchises in the Asia-Pacific region…
======================================================
…NOW 2009…
Burger King owned by:
PERF Restaurants Inc. & BK Titans
BK Titans Inc. is a company organized by:
1. Albert Lina – (Airfreight 2100)
2. Lito Alvarez -
3. Manny V. Pangilinan – (Chairman of PLDT)
4. Ricky Vargas –
5. Wilson Young – (Tanduay Distillers, Inc.)
…MALALIM ANG BULSA NATIN NGAYON…
======================================================
ALL AIR21 FANS: (GOOD NEWS)
ang sabi nila:
…”MAGLALABAS SILA NG MAS-MALAKING PONDO”…
NANINIWALA AKO…BAKIT ???…
infact they are already hired a GOOD MENTOR…(Yeng Guiao)…
at sandamukal na COACHING STAFF from PBL…(George Gallent)…
…SO CHANCE NA NATIN ITO PARA MAKORONAHAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
ITO ANG OPINION KO:
from bad start (0-3), hirap silang mag-laro dahil sa pag-kadismaya sa finals…
so dahil hirap mag-laro sa huli,,,
======================================================
Talk N Text is owned by Pilipino Telepono (Piltel)…
1. 92.1% owned by Smart Communications
2. 7.9% owned by PLDT Co.
======================================================
IM EXCITED FOR THE NEXT CONFERENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Teka lang…Burger King tapos Brgy. Ginebra Kings…(BK vs BGK)…
GOODLUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m always surprised and amazed by the posts of jmarc, young don and neil. Galing ninyo mga pare! Nakakabilib kayo! But putting doubt aside, I’m getting a different picture of the situation with your postings. Sana naman, it will be for the good of the team ang mga nangyayaring rigodon. Hindi kagaya nina Mr. Lina at Mr. Alvarez na nagpagamit kay MVP as proven by the Ranidel trade.
And if it is also true na lalakas ang budget ng Air21/BK… then sana they will make use part of that budget to get a true big man they need. Sana if Japeth Aguilar will join the draft this year eh sana they should do all their best to collar this young man. Kung hindi pa man siya ready eh sana kumbinsihin siya na pumasok na sa draft at baka sakaling makuha natin siya using the first pick given by Red Bull. Kasi I’m sure RB will be the last in the standings this year and in that case, they will have a chance to get the number one pick which they gave to Air21 via the Espinas trade.

IN DEFENSE OF BO.
If 2008 was unforgettable because of the achievements mentioned here in this article. It has to be taken into consideration that it would have not been possible if not for Coach Bo Perasol. He has been with the Lina franchise since the MBA days with Laguna Lakers until the end of the Air21 campaign in the PBA.
Credit should be given to the man and to his contributions for the franchise.He has been praised, he has been criticized ,people raised him up but sadly people from Air21 also pulled him down.
He was the only coach in the FedEx/Air21 PBA campaign that brought the team to great heights.
Amazingly he acheived it all with his hands tied behind his back.It is an open secret that Air21 was a head case of a team to coach and handle from the experience of much high profile coaches that came before Perasol took over as head coach.
He had to make more adjustments than any previous coach because of the common demeanor of Air21 mgmt in not letting their coaches free hand in coaching style as if the powers that be of Air21 wanted to run the team coaching wise like a situation of having a “backseat driver”.
From continous coaching changes even when he was already “in charge” as well as the continous “giving away” of prized players to other teams via lopsided trades Perasol endured all of this and yet stayed true and loyal to Air21 and his job as head coach.
A true testament would be the preparation leading to the memorable 2008 Fiesta Conference.
It has been noted that every off season rumors abound that Air21 wil be bringing in Robert Jaworski as head coach(we all know now that it was just press release for media mileage).Going into the Fiesta Conference Perasol even undured the decimation of his coaching staff. At the start of the 2008 season Philippine Cup Perasol had a complete staff in having assistants Ricky Dandan, Johnny Tam, Ching Marcelino and conditioning coach Chester Tiongko and even brought in a new member of the staff in Benjie Sipin.Coaching changes where made before the start of the memorable Fiesta Conference.Management decided to trim and just have a “skeleton” crew for Perasol to work with. Perasol was left with Tiongko and Sipin in getting the team ready for the Fiesta Conf. Management however brought in former PBa star Leo Isaac.
That was a sign of managements letting Perasol coach with his hand tied behind his back.But lo and behold Perasol blossomed with his rag tag coaching staff that raised eyebrows in the PBA community.Never has anyone seen an Air21 team like the one that played in that memorable Fiesta Conf. With a gem of an import in Steve Thomas the franchise achieved its highest point.
All of this was achieved with alot of distraction for Perasol and his crew but still they endured.There are ifs and but but it is in my opinion that Perasol would have brought Air21 to a much respectable finish in the current Phil Cup had it not been given too many distractions particularly the Ranidel de Ocampo trade that was truly done in bad timing(as posted in my PBA conspiracies article.
How hard is it for a coach to be handling and bring the team to a championship appearance and yet word is out particularly from Management that “if Jaworski wants the job ..it is his”..hah…can they tell that to a Yeng Guiao?And yet Perasol stayed true to his job and his responsibility to his players.
It is to his credit that he tried inspite of…
Now the Air21 saga has ended…enter Burger King and while his involvement with Air21 changed his life…the entry of Burger King and Yeng Guiao and the new management of the team he gave so many years of his life to…has turned a page in his life and love with basketball.
He will be missed.Appreciation and thanks are not enough for what he gave to the Lina Franchise.

Nice information !!!…you really provided that for everybody…thanks !!!…
so everybody will know whats really happening…

To: Si Josef Ramos
Sir pano yun kapag nag-palit na itong site from Air21 to Burger King,
yung USERNAME at PASSWORD ba namin hindi mababago o ise-SEND nyo sa e-mail namin???…
======================================================
To: neil
C. = Allado / Quinahan
SF = Santos / Canaleta
SG = David / Baguio / Intal
PG = C. Cruz / M. Cruz / (Billiones or hired a veteran PG)
Trade: Villanueva / Sta. Maria / Kramer
=======================
Quinahan = his a excellent player, no reason to trade & his in climax career…
Se = no reason din to trade this guy kahit hindi gaanong nagamit last conference…
Sanatos / David / Baguio = are no question
Billiones = pwede because of his age (34), pero sayang may quality minutes ito…
Canaleta = dapat na tayong mag-prepare sa departure nito (out of the market yan)…
======================================================
…I WANT YOU ALL TO THINK ABOUT THIS…
…SAMIGUE EMAN…
dahil nag-papagaling pa at tsaka may IMPORT ngayon…
…JAPET AGUILAR…
well, kung graduate na sya…GOOD FOR US…
bakit ???…dahil KULELAT yung Red Bull at SIGURADO TOP PICK SILA NGAYON…
ang maganda ay nasa ATIN na yun because of the trade of Espinas…
dahil pang-apat tayo sa huli this conference kaso naka-depend din yan this Conf…
…CARLOS SHARMA…
…wala syang ibubuga dito…
Sharma (drafted then direct) provide good game to Red Bull frontline…
but Arboleda (100% direct hired) cannot bring this team to promise land…
======================================================
…CENTER ISSUE…
get Rabeh Ahmed “Rabah” Al-Hussaini…kung pinoy sya…
…POWER FORWARD ISSUE…
strick pure filipino ba talaga ???…
suggestion lang…How about RUDY HATFIELD or Marc Pingris (both ex-Fedex)…
…SMALL FORWARD ISSUE…
i said prepare for the departure of CANALETA so for me…
i think we should get PAUL RICO MAIERHOFER near future…
…POINT GUARD ISSUE…
for me if you can HIRED RODNEY SANTOS or JOHNNY ABARIENTOS…DO IT…
…make it double purpose…
======================================================
idol_arwind…YES ATIN ITO !!!!!!!!!!!!!…
Burger ?, burger ?, burger ?, burger ?…
Ang pangit !!!…MASARAP kaso nakaka-GUTOM…
Whoppers ???…ang pangit rin !!!…
AH EWAN BASTA…SUSUPORTA AKO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOODLUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EXCITED NA AKO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How Air21 and BK will be different.
Questions have been flying around as to who really owns BK and the shift from Air21 to BK. If you followed my several post, hints and the real reasons have been pointed out. But how different would Burger King be come opening day of 2009 Fiesta Conf.?
COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Even with the same players Air2 coaching philosophy has been dictated by Mr. Lina and Mr.Alvarez. That left Coach Perasol very limited freedom with regards to coaching philosophy.Insiders to the oragnization would know that ever since Lina Franchise joined the PBA(or even before in the MBA) there are several rules he wants that hampered not only Bo Perasol but all the previous coaches that handled the franchise.
NO ZONE RULE-
this hampered the coaching style and “diskarte” of every coach of Air21. Which also made it easy for opposing coaches to scout Air21. Hindi mag zzone yang team na yan kaya very easy for teams to attack the individual players of Air21. When occassions happen that nandaya at nag zonme ang team coaching staff gets the flack from either Mr. Lina or Mr. Alvarez. later part of the Air21 franchise in the PBA nakakitaan na ng kaunting kaluwagan ang mga “nagbubulong” with regards to this rule.Pero huli na anag lahat.Would they dictate this rule to Coach Yeng Guaio? How much of management would dictate to Yeng? If management/ownership is the same would this happen? I don’t think so coz wala na say sila Mr. Lina and Mr. Alvarez. Mikee Romero is the voice of Burger King now!and Coach Yeng Guiao is the LAW!ang bumangga giba or di na makakapunta ng Pampanga.
6 MINUTE RULE
Another ruole imposed by Air21 management. There no big problem with this just to give everyone exposure. But when people question why Bo Perasol; keeps on shuffling and subbing players in and out it is because of this rule. But with the talent that the team has it is either the rule hampers players na “mainit” or nagtatampo naman ang ibang players na nalilimit playing time nila kasi nga ang hirap talaga hatiin ang minuto sa maraming players and still make everyone happy.Mahirap din na may mga tao sa likod ng bench ng Air21 na tinatawagan ni Mr. Lina sa cellphone at ni-rerelay kay Bo Perasol or any of the staff kung ano gusto mangyari ni Mr. Lina sa substitution patterns.Again is this going to happen to Coach Yeng Guiao? Tatangapin nya ba itong ganitong style? I don’t think so.
DISCIPLINE
Not to take anything away from Bo Perasol but Perasol and Guiao are poles apart. Since wala na si Perasol players have to live with Guiao it either that or leave sila. Pero the way I see it medyo mag memellow down si Guiao kasi puno naman ng talent ang team nya ngayon.
NEW ATMOSPHERE
now everything is new.the players will be surrounded with new personalities, from head coach to assitants to utility and staff.According to sources eh talagang binitawan na ni Mr. Alvarez ang day to day activities ng team word is out nga na wala na syang say na originally ay meron pa dapat but since blitzkreig type ang take over ni Mikee Romero sa team ay na itsapwera na si Mr.Alvarez and is just left with making press releases just to protect yung dealings ni Mr. Lina with BK under Mikee and Manny Pangilinan.
Some may be retained but the way things are going lahat ng logistic support ng team ay ipapasok na ni Mikee pati hiring ng new personel.
KAYA WITH ALL THINGS GOING BURGER KINGS AND YENG GUIAO’S WAY EH NOTHING BUT A CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE ANG KATAPAT NYAN NO EXCUSES!ANYTHING BELOW A CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE WOULD BE DISAPPOINTING.

diehard-21 Tuesday, 13 January 2009 at 9:52 pm
If i-trade din nila si Arwind, it is my opinion na dapat mag-disband na lang sila totally and let the new management form a team from scratch.
And that is what I don’t like with this team if gagawin lang nilang gatasan ang Air21/BK.
